snakes Hi
yes there are snakes, some are nasty, but trust me they are more anxious about avoiding you.
I spent many years in the middle east and still on the odd occasion check my shoes or slippers in the morning, for snakes and scorpions out of habit. Not a required task in Kefalonia. I would be surprised (unless you went looking for them) if you ever come across a snake.
The bigger risk is sea urchins near rocky areas in the sea. If you go for a snorkle, watch where you put your feet, or wear jellies. The spines of a sea urchin are capable of independant life. If you stand on a sea urchin the spines break off and they wiggle for hours afterwards working their way deeper. Very painfull. If you are affected, pour vinegar onto the whole area, it helps to equalise the PH back to normal and reduces the sting effect.
In my youth I would catch a few urchins and the insides make a nice salty sauce for some dishes. So I would take an urchin, cut through the beak underneath, empty the contents on to my plate, scrape out the insides with a teaspoon and when the shell was empty, put the sea urchin on the floor. If the nearest holiday makers were not horrified enough watching me and what i was doing with the urchin, you should have seen their faces when an empty dead urchin gets up and moves off!!!
  It trundles round for hours, gradually winding down!!

In the Jeep on the way down to Assos last year, we came across the biggest snake I've ever seen outside a zoo.
It was sidewinding its wasy across the road right in front of us, must have been about five foot long. A plea by my nine year old son to stop and get out and have a look in the grass was greeted by howls of derision by my wife and daughter (and quietly by me).
It was a beige and yellow stripy thing, which someone told us later was quite a nasty little bugger!
