It's just another day Kefalonia
Speculation is mounting in the coffee shops, they now say the bloke predicting the earthquake is from Zante so trying to boost the tourism there away from Kefalonia, ........funny if it should be centred there?? I am not totally convinced of this fact, I think the million dollar reward has a bit more to do with it  Mean time back in the UK, 1. One in five houses going under the hammer last month were repossessions! 2. House sales for June are down 50% 3. Barratt homes are overjoyed that they managed to re-finance their cash flow (this is posh for borrow more) by £400 million AND Britain has a new mortgage lender on the high street. Yup the Bank of England has just entered the new British sub prime market. It has been proposed they issue government bonds to the mortgage companies and banking houses in exchange for these banks lending more money to people in debt. People which under current circumstances these lenders would not lend to....................... Sub Prime or wot? This is a good idea...........................  :? I am for once lost for words............................. TDC

Bad to worse
Things are going from bad to worse now in the UK. In a survey in yesterday's paper conducted by Halifax it was discovered The average person's savings are £500 and 33% of adults in the UK would not survive (financially) 11 days if they lost their job! The surprise is the least exposed are those living in Wales  But then most of those are on benefits aren't they?  Other facts brought to light are Joe Average needs £333.56 per week to stay afloat and unemployment will rise from 1.6 million to 2.5 million in the next 2 years. Oh dear! Never mind our councils are always there to protect us are they not? In their la-*test*-('") craziness it seems some councils wish to place an 18 certificate on films such as 101 Dalmatians, Pinocchio, Lord of the Rings and Alice in Wonderland........Why?????? Because certain characters in these films light up a fag!!!! sorry for our American readers, that's light up a cigarette we do not set fire to Gay people........(yet  ) And A painter and decorator this week has been fined by his local council for smoking in his privately registered van! They claim it is his work place! His wife paid the fine but personally I would not have. I would have taken it all the way to court and made them look stupid on principle. All the painter could splutter in exasperation was "I paint houses not vans!" Let them try this on me....PLEASE! :pirate:   Finally the UN has found that us Brits are not nice enough to Muslims    OH!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! TDC

If I had the bollocks I'd be with you now TDC. :-( So who nicked 'em Jed? Do you want Dave the Greek to pay them a visit?

HughC- 07-27-2008

Hiya Jed w, if I was in a ship sinking that fast I would jump overboard. I know that we all have personal circumstance, but where there is a will there is a way. P.S. Wait till 30th July has come and gone. Dibbadibbadoo. :)

Its all bit of a conumdrum really. Just got back from Kef and 'things' are not so rosey in Greece' garden - I watched the news quite a bit!! Whereas this weekend in Bournemouth everyone is very merry and bright. Yes I know it won't last, and when it rains next week it will be all gloom and doom again, but I do think we have to make the best of wherever we are. I also had a chat with a friend over from the States things aren't to clever there either -well no surprise about that as they well Mr Bush has just about f----d the rest of the world anyway!! I am just really happy to be able to flit between the countries.

Another day in Kefalonia
Hi All, Interesting the "blame someone in Zante" scenario. The very first time I visited Kef (about 1980-ish) on my first night on the island there was a huge fire in the Lassi area. Property-wise this wasn't so serious as there were around three tavernas and not much in the way of accomodation. In fact, a lot nicer than it is now, even without the pavement. Anyway, we were woken up at three in the morning and ushered out of the apartment and stood around with mostly local people watching the Kefalonia fire service (one ancient engine and three blokes) try to douse a blazing hill side. The talk then was of wicked Zante sabotage to deter people from visiting Kef and this "theme" has remained ever since, regardless of what type of disaster. During that particular fire, there were also explosions every so often. These were only partly blamed on insurgents from Zante, the other theory being that it was ammunition that had been hidden during the Italian/German occupation of the island in WW2. The "explosions" I was later told, and have since experienced were, in fact, olive trees going pop in the extreme heat. Unless the sneaky Zanteans are secretly planting exploding olive trees on Kef I don't suppose they can be blamed. Can't pin the actual earthquakes on them either, so i suppose malicious rumour is the next best thing. Not long to wait until the 30th so let's hope it's all bollocks. All the best, Sparrow.

Totally off topic, but mentioning explosions reminded me of this. On our first ever visit to Poros a small fishing boat pulled in a WW2 mine in it's nets. It very gingerly made it's way back to shore and was positioned in the lagoon at the fork in the road. This wasn't a beach then just some smelly rocks and shallow water. The police came and ushered everyone out of the water with much whistle blowing. Then they expolded the mine. I'd never heard a bigger bang (until recently when we were struck by lightning) and a great plume of water went into the air. Quick as a flash all the local kids were in the water collecting all the fish that jhad been killed by the blast. Apparantly in the 80's it was fairly common for a boat to drag up a mine or one get washed up on shore, or the odd goat step into some hidden ammunition and get blown apart. Anyway, please make your way in an orderly fashion back to the original thread. jed.w 8)
