Brain Teaser
Imagine you are in a room with 3 switches. In an adjacent room there are 3 bulbs (let's say in lamps which are on a regular table) - all are off at the moment, each switch belongs to one bulb. It is impossible to see from one room to another. How can you find out which switch belongs to which bulb, if you may enter the room with the bulbs only once? Note No help from anybody else is allowed. Find out which switch belongs to which bulb - identify all 3 switches (so find out what bulbs are switches 1, 2 and 3 connected to) Have fun. TDC 8)

I will assume it is night time and there is no other lighting in the adjacent room. Otherwise have a few beers until it is dark. Turn on switches 1 and 2. Go into the adjacent room. The bulb which isn't illuminated (let's call it C) will be operated by switch 3. Unscrew one of the two illuminated bulbs (let's call that bulb B). Go back to the other room but leave the door open. Turn off switch 2. If the adjacent room is plunged into darkness switch 2 operates bulb A. If there is still light in the room switch 1 operates bulb A. Sit down with an ouzo and contemplate whether you might have drunk too much and got the answer wrong. Phil

Pass the Ouzo to Reuben!
I think you need another drink Reuben, then you can try again. By the way you cannot leave the door open anyway! But even if you could you would still not be able to identify all three bulbs to all three switches accurately with your method. There are holes in your solution.......and none in the walls or door! Another teaser
OK if the last one is causing problems to you Reuben after drinking all that beer try this one! You are stuck in a room with no windows and no doors. There is a hole in the floor about a foot deep and just wider than the diameter of a table tennis ball. There is a table tennis ball at the bottom of the hole. You have a fork, a wrench, and a long, thin plastic wire. How do you get the ball out of the hole? P.S. Without damage to the ball :det2: TDC 8) There are correct answers to both by the way and if you really really really want to know and are desperate PM me! TDC

Hi TDC, go into the room with the lamps and bring the lamps back into the room with the switches. Then any old eejet can work it out. As for ping pong, smash a bigger hole in the floor around the ball with the wrench and retrieve it by hand. What prizes have I won? 8)

Dave the Greek- 07-18-2008

Sorry Hugh, the ping pong prize is mine! easy peasy, you pee into the hole, and the ping pong floats up. I dont mean You pee into the hole cos I would have to pick it up. I pee into the hole I pick it up! Paul picks up the tab for tonights feed. 8)

move the swicthes into the other room or feel the heat off the bulbs ?

That Darn Cat- 07-18-2008
Answer
OK DTG, you are correct.................. except I pee and you collect Reubens balls if you want me to pick up the tab tonight on my own! Close Ian! Now the other one, sorry again Reuben. 3 lights and 3 switches. You turn on N0.1 switch leave for a few minutes. Turn it off. Turn on No2 switch and go into the room. The bulb for switch NO1 will still be warm, the bulb for No2 will be on, thus the bulb for NO3 will be cold and off OK now? :-D TDC

Speaking of Balls!!!!!!!
OK DTG, speaking of balls Having snitched Reubens balls, how can you throw one of them as hard as you can and have it come back to you, even if it doesn't hit anything, there is nothing attached to it, and no one else catches or throws it back? HUH????? :det2: TDC

Regarding the other puzzle, I'm afraid you cannot use Reuben's balls - he has had the snip :-( Phil

Sorry Hugh!
Hugh, May I refer you respectfully to your signature? Yup Ian you throw the ball straight up (don't ask what Hugh please!) A vertical plane as it were. But then you could always argue the ball had come in to contact with particles of air and gravity! Because if it didn't, it would never return and perpetual motion would be invented. TDC 8)
